On the initial visit, two personal shoppers work with each client offering a one-on-one wardrobe consultation and professional dressing. Each client receives a two-week, mix and match wardrobe and accessories. After 6 months, the client may schedule a second appointment to receive a change of season wardrobe. More than 60 people volunteer as personal shoppers to our men, women, and children clients. Each one of them is dedicated to improving our clients’ self-esteem by helping them choose an appropriate, functional, and flattering wardrobe.
In 1999, IFS Founder Barbara Lee’s vision was to find a way to provide a positive and personalized shopping experience for women who were struggling to meet the serious challenges in their lives. She wanted each client to have a stress-free shopping experience that could boost her self-image while finding suitable clothes for a job interview. IFS was able to do this through donated clothing from the public and donated time from our personal shoppers. Twice a year, each client receives a complete two-week professional wardrobe, including undergarments, shoes, and accessories. To date, IFS has dressed more 5,500 women.
In 2001, IFS launched its children’s program. At least 1,200 children in Marin don’t have enough weather-appropriate clothes to wear throughout the year. Many of those children are our clients. Studies have shown that when children dress like their peers, their ability to adapt in social situations improves, as does their performance in school. Also, parents benefit emotionally and financially knowing their children have appropriate clothing. New collaborations with the Student Advocate for San Rafael City Schools and First Five Children and Families Commission broaden our focus on teen mothers age 14 to 19. To date, IFS has dressed more than 3,900 children in need. Image for Success is committed to dressing our youngest clients free of charge.
In 2005, a men’s clothing boutique was established and IFS became a family agency. The Men’s Place quickly became a vital part of the services that Image for Success provides to aid adults entering the job market. Since its inception, more than 2,600 men have received wardrobes consisting of everything from beautiful suits, jackets, and trousers, to shoes, belts, ties, and even toiletries.
IFS is committed to Providing Clothing, Preserving Dignity, and Promoting Self- Reliance for men, women, and children in Marin County.
